Every part of our saddles are UK made here in our Kent countryside workshop.
Today we’re making WOW badges using our lathe.
This is part of our Workshop Wednesday series of videos we release on our social media channels (see the Facebook playlist).
At WOW Saddles, precision and quality are at the heart of everything we do—even down to the smallest details like our saddle badges. That’s where our SR-20JII sliding head lathe comes into play.
A Machine Built for Precision
Combining a 6-tool turning platen, a 5-spindle cross drilling unit, and a 4-spindle back working tool post, the SR-20JII sliding head lathe offers impressive tooling capacity. This setup allows us to carry out a huge range of machining operations all in one place—perfect for creating our high-spec, custom-designed saddle badges.
From Rod to Badge
It all starts with high-quality brass or aluminium rods being loaded into the bar feeder. From there, the lathe takes over.
Every element of the badge design has been meticulously programmed into the control panel, ensuring that each badge is machined with total consistency and accuracy. The raw material feeds through to the machining area where the real magic happens.
The Role of Lubrication
During operation, the components are continuously lubricated with oil. This is essential to reduce friction, minimise wear, and manage heat buildup. Not only does this keep the machine running smoothly, but it also ensures long-term precision and reliability.
A Step-by-Step Process
The badge is formed in three key stages:
Front Etching – The tool turning platen etches the front of the badge with our signature design.
Side Tooling – The cross drilling unit adds any necessary detailing around the edges.
Back Finishing – The badge is transferred to the back working tools, which complete the rear design.
Ready for WOW Saddles
Once complete, any excess material is ejected and collected for recycling and the finished badges are then sent down a conveyor belt, ready to be polished in our mini-tumblers. From there, they’re mounted proudly onto our WOW Saddles.
